Sport at Swallowdale Summer Term 2015

sw bulletThe term started with the Year 5 and 6 Girls’ Football Team beginning their league matches on Thursday evenings. The Girls’ League was organised by Jim reason and his wonderful team of coaches and refs from Asfordby Amateurs. Mr.Cant, Mr.Vedrine and many parents took the girls to Grove for the first round of matches. After round 1 Swallowdale was joint bottom of the league! However, the girls’ after school club training soon proved beneficial when they went to Brownlow for the next round of matches and remained unbeaten! The good form became even more impressive when Swallowdale hosted the final round of matches. Again the girls remained unbeaten and became runners up to Brownlow (only 1 point behind!). A terrific effort by all of the 21 girls used.

sw bulletLaura Morely and Di Burdett, from Hamilton Tennis Club came into school to coach tennis to Year R and Year 6 whilst the ‘Chance To Shine Cricket Coaching’ programme continued with various coaches from Leicestershire Cricket Club. Mrs. Partridge and Mr.Vedrine then took two teams to the Melton Kwik Cricket Festival, co-organised by Clare Marlow and Melton Cricket Club. Having been to the after school Cricket Club taken by Mr.Cant and Mrs. Partridge,it was evident that the children’s skill levels had shown a considerable improvement.

sw bulletMrs.Nicholls knidly held ‘Quad Kids’ Clubs’ after school culminating in the children competing in ‘The Quad Kids Festival’ at Long Field, another event organised by Clare Marlow. The children won 'The Spirit Of The Quad Kids’ Festival Award’. Mrs. Nicholls also took some Year 4/5 and 6 children to the first of the ‘Tennis Festivals’ organised by Laura Morely of Hamilton. Mrs.Edwards also took a squad of year 6 children to a special skills and competition day at Hamilton Tennis Club, again organised by Laura Morely for the Lynx Academy Schools. Whilst writing this I have just informed some children from KS1 and 2 that they will participate in the ‘ Red Tennis Festival’, held after school on Friday 26th June and once again organised by Laura Morely.

sw bulletThe Netballers also had a ‘Netball Festival’ after school, taken by Miss Shaw and Mrs.Edwards who had also taken the girls in a club after school for several weeks. The girls did themselves and their coaches proud by coming 3rd. There was great support again from the girls’ parents.

sw bulletMiss Mallet and Mr.Vedrine took two teams of golfers to 'The Tri- Golf Festival Festival' ( again organised by Clare Marlow) and both teams became Champions. A great effort.

sw bulletKristian, from West Bromwich Albion, visited the school taking children from all age ranges for some football skills and games sessions.

sw bulletThere have been assemblies taken by cricketers Darren Bicknell, (ex Surrey and England) and Tammy Beaumont (Kent and England).

sw bulletFinally of course there was The KS2 Sports’ Day. The children were superb and their parents and relatives provided a great atmosphere. All teaching and support staff were, as usual, incredibly enthusiastic, (especially Mr.Barrow and Mr.Vedrine who helped to set out the Ks2 Sports).

sw bulletKS 1 children, parents and staff will, I am sure have been just as superb when their Sports is held.

sw bulletFinally, as the academic year draws to a close it would be remiss of me not to thank Miss Vials for her invaluable help, encouragement and support, and the wonderful office staff who arrange buses for the children to get to such things as swimming lessons and festivals. They also help in so many other ways, including checking visiting coaches have the appropriate certificates to be able to coach the children.

sw bulletOf course the children are so lucky to have the whole of the staff give of their time to learn from coaches so that PE and Games lessons are of the highest standard. Many also generously give their time to support with so many clubs throughout the year. We have also be helped enormously by Clare Marlow, who since Christmas, has taken on the role of ‘Melton Primary School Games and Festivals Co-ordinator’. She deserves huge praise for putting together a calendar of sporting events not only for this term but for the whole of next year.

sw bulletThe year 5 children will hopefully, weather permitting, have gone to ‘The Belvoir Estate Day’ for a day of cricket, orienteering and learning how a country estate is run. Darren Bicknell and Neil Atkins, aided by some volunteers from Knipton cricket Club will have helped the children to develop a variety of skills.

sw bulletHave a good summer, with hopefully an ‘Ashes’ win to come, Andy Murray becoming Wimbledon Men’s Champion again, Lewis Hamilton to win more F1 races and England Rugby team showing good form leading into The World Cup! One can but dream!!
