Learning About World War II in Year 4

This term, Year 4 have been learning all about World War II.  This has included learning about how the war started and identifying the countries involved using maps. We have read the book ‘The Lion and the Unicorn’ which is the story of an evacuee called Lenny.  This has helped us imagine what it must have been like to be a child during the Blitz – we even received a letter from Lenny’s mum who was really worried about him so of course we wrote back in character. For art, we enjoyed creating scenes of the Blitz using watercolours and silhouettes which are now on display in school along with paragraphs of our writing.

For homework, we impressed our teachers with the Anderson shelters we created and there was a special assembly for us to show the school our hard work and creativity.

We also visited Beaumanor Hall and learnt all about decoding and rationing. We even spent some time inside a real air read shelter and sang war time songs we have been learning to pass the time.
