Hello, I am Ian Wilkinson and currently Chair of Governors at Swallowdale School. I I have been involved with the school both as a parent (my four children all attended the school) and governor for about 27 years.

There have been many changes, but throughout that time the welfare, safety and educational standards for our children have been uppermost in my mind. I am particularly proud that the last Ofsted inspectors recognised the quality of the school when it considered us to be ‘Outstanding’.

The school is fortunate in having a dedicated governing body, a group of individuals drawn from all walks of life and experiences. It is made up of elected parents, school staff and co-opted representatives who serve for a period of 4 years.

Our role is to work in partnership with the Head teacher to raise standards and performance at Swallowdale.

The Governor’s key responsibilities include;

· Ensuring that the school runs effectively and provides the best possible education for all pupils.

· Challenging and supporting the school to do better.

· Taking a strategic view, setting policies, plans and targets.

· Monitoring and evaluating results.

· Monitoring the school’s finances, including the annual budget and ongoing spend.

· Delegating enough power to the Head Teacher to run the school effectively.

In all this we are accountable for how the school is run to the parents and the Bradgate Educational Partnership trust.

To do this the governors meet as a full body at least once a term. Smaller, dedicated committees are involved in financial planning and auditing, the delivery of the curriculum and performance targets, health and safety and the development of Swallowdale’s staff. Strategic long term planning is carried out to ensure the success of the school as it faces the many challenges of the future.

What the Governors don’t do is to organise, manage or control the school on a day-to-day basis. This is the responsibility of the Head Teacher. We do not get involved in individual pupil issues unless there is a serious incident or an appeal. Community governors represent the interests of the wider community, while parent governors represent the interests of all the parents and not just their own children.

The governing body and Swallowdale’s dedicated staff have a close working relationship which enables us to pursue our common goal, the highest educational standards for your children.
